Robotics and AI for the UN Sustainable Development Goals

We are on the cusp of the fourth industrial revolution—an age of artificial intelligence, robots, 3D printing, virtual and augmented reality, and more. At the same time, we find ourselves in a world with increasing social inequities and unresolved global challenges. Now more than ever, there is a need for citizens who are well-equipped to take advantage of these powerful technologies and apply them in ways that uphold human values and protect human lives.

In this 8 day bootcamp, students will engage with cutting-edge technologies while applying them to global challenges defined by the UN SDGs. Students will receive mentorship from Stanford engineers, design thinking researchers, and curriculum experts. The program will allow students to exercise their creativity and critical thinking skills in the process. By the end of the program, students will leave with a clearly defined project that they may choose to continue to work on, with support from the MakerGhat mentorship network.

Over 8 days, students will

  1. Program in Scratch (Python for more advanced or motivated students). Scratch is a powerful language that allows us to focus on the fundamentals without getting lost in code syntax.

  2. Learn Fundamentals of Design Thinking

  3. Work with Arduino microcontrollers with Sensors, Motors, and other Robotic toolkit components

  4. Learn Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

  5. Learn 3D printing

  6. Apply AI to Solve a Global Grand Challenge — food insecurity, public health, education, financial security, and other topics

Developed by Stanford University researchers, our program and space are designed to foster active and hands-on learning, tinkering, and project-based situated learning. We have woven together a curriculum that will build technical rigor on fundamental design, engineering, prototyping, and testing. This curriculum aims to connect students to the core knowledge of robotics, AI, and design thinking, and also introduce them to a variety of real-world application areas for these problem-solving skills.

The curriculum is designed to minimize lecture-style education and passive instruction; all artifacts of the program will be project-driven or active learning-based.


We welcome ages 8 through 18 years (age-appropriate tasks will be provided). No prerequisites. We will limit sign-up to the first 12 students who register to maintain our 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio.

Cost: INR 10,000 (inclusive of GST), includes:

  1. Facilitation of the program by researchers from Stanford, IIT-Bombay, and Georgia Tech

  2. Materials (Arduino kits, sensors, electronic components, other tools)

  3. Mentor supervision and guidance to build a ‘real-world’ project

  4. Access to all tools at MakerGhat: 3D printers, woodworking tools, electronic kits, art and craft material, etc.
