The Problem

India is facing a major job crisis.

180 million youth will enter India’s workforce in the next 15 years, over 50% from marginalized backgrounds. 90 million new jobs will have to be created, many requiring digital/technological competency.

Yet over 54% of Indian youth today are not employable for any job, and 37% with a college degree are unemployed.

MakerGhat aims to prepare 5 million youth for the workforce by 2025.

Our Solution

MakerGhat builds low-cost makerspaces in schools and communities, accompanied by evidence-based curriculum and robust teacher training. Our programs develop key skills and attitudes linked to employability through hands-on training.

Youth between 12 to 18 years spend at least 1.5 hours a week on our program to develop fundamental 21st-century skills linked to employability: critical thinking, problem-solving, self-efficacy, and communication and collaboration.

More broadly, our goal is to build the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs who come from diverse backgrounds and enable social and economic change for their communities.

Teacher & Student Testimonials

“Our program is really helping kids to understand and learn the concepts very clearly. Kids are so surprised seeing the outputs that they can create using ordinary materials that are easily available. Apart from what they learn from their sessions, they go home, try it out and come back with their own projects which really inspires me as a teacher.”

- Trainer (Pudhukottai, WVI community program)

“There was also an increase in attendance as compared to the theory classes and since the practical lessons started the parents are also encouraging students to go back to school so it's been great!”

— Trainer (Karapakkam High School,
Lend-A-Hand India program)

“In fact, some students used the LDR activity and put one in the lobby of the school. The light switches on in the night! It was an initiative the students took on their own and fixed it!!”

— Trainer (Jaigopal Garodiya Girls Government school, Lend-A-Hand India program)
